Smooth heated stones are used in two ways during this type of massage. Some will be placed to deliver concentrated centers of heat, such as along the spine. Others will be oiled and used by the therapist as tools to stroke major muscle groups. You may request light, medium or firm pressure, and of course, you'll have the final say over the stones' temperature when they touch you.
The heat relaxes muscles quickly and increases blood flow to the area being worked on, which accelerates the release of tension and toxins.
Basalt stones in a variety of sizes and weights are used during this type of massage because they hold heat well. Before you arrive for your session, the therapist sanitizes the stones in water heated to between 130 and 150 degrees.
Some spa goers like to vary their routine with this type of massage. Others say this technique, derived from Native American culture and perfected in Arizona in the early 1990s, is their quickest way to a state of relaxation.
